Harry and Madeleine Winslow have been blessed with talent, money, and charm. Harry is a National Book Award–winning author on the cusp of greatness. Madeleine is a woman of sublime beauty and grace whose elemental goodness and serenity belie a privileged upbringing. Bonded by deep devotion, they share a love that is both envied and admired. The Winslows play host to a coterie of close friends and acolytes eager to bask in their golden radiance, whether they are in their bucolic East Hampton cottage, abroad in Rome thanks to Harry's writing grant, or in their comfortable Manhattan brownstone. One weekend at the start of the summer season, Harry and Maddy, who are in their early forties, meet Claire and cannot help but be enchanted by her winsome youth, quiet intelligence, and disarming naivete. Drawn by the Winslows' inscrutable magnetism, Claire eagerly falls into their welcoming orbit. But over the course of the summer, her reverence transforms into a dangerous desire. By Labor Day, it is no longer enough to remain one of their hangers-on.

If you can imagine Don Draper from "Mad Men" meeting Mirabelle from Steve Martin's "Shopgirl," you can safely move on to the next book on your list. There are a lot of positive reviews of "Indiscretion" on Good Reads, but this is basically twelve hours of digging into other people's bad choices with a few utterly random things thrown in. You spend the first few hours waiting to see how the affair begins, and the rest of the book describes the aftermath. It would be interesting to know what inspired Dubow to write this and what his intentions were. It's not even clear why the narrator, Walter, is telling this tale. He's certainly an interesting choice of narrator--since he's been in love with the adulterer's wife Madeline for years, his take on the affair is something like "Claire was selfish and amoral, Harry was stupid." In a way, this is a refreshing break from books that glorify adultery or portray love as an irresistible force, but I certainly did not feel refreshed during any of its telling.

While this story is mostly interesting, the disappointing conclusion leaves an unsatisfactory taste that derails this novel. 4 of 10 stars

I really enjoyed this book. This book sucked me in right from the start. How many books are there about infidelity of unfaithful partners? Probably more than I can count. Why is Indiscretion different? I can't quite put my finger on it but I feel like it had something to do with the constant niggling in the back of my mind that something was going to go drastically wrong? Did something else happen you ask? Well, yes, but you're going to have to read this book to find out.

Never more then two, I told her once. I repeat an old joke about why martinis are like a women's breasts; one is never enough and three are too many.
