Iceland-born Canadian filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson spins this offbeat comedy about fine food and feathered friends. Whimsical and touching.

Shot in beautiful Newfoundland by Icelandic director Sturla Gunnarsson. Based on the novel by Canadian Edward Riche, who also wrote the screenplay. Stars Molly Parker, a wonderful Canadian actress.
For those who complain about Canadian movies this modest, yet excellent film, should point the way for a Canadian film culture ( outside of Quebec )- it's well written, has quality acting, with a solid Director making a uniquely Canadian story.

This movie had a lot of potential, but with so many different stories and sub-stories, it was hard to really connect to the overall story.

Basically, Dave's restaurant and marriage is failing, but his eccentric friend, Phonse, has an idea to increase business at the restaurant by faking a bird sighting of an extinct duck. Dave also finds himself attracted to a woman whom he meets while having dinner at Phonse's house.

This would have been enough of a storyline, however a whole bunch of things are going on with Phonse. He keeps these weird lights in a secret tunnel. He finds a large block of cocaine (of which he gives some to Dave who snorts it a lot) and he's building a recreational submarine. All of this while being watched by the government. It was just too much going on, but I don't know how they could have done the movie without them.

Another weird Canadian movie. Sometimes we Canucks do engaging or adorable weird movies. This one, I'm not so sure it's either. Couldn't stop watching it, though, so I guess it has that going for it.
