What Dogs Want: A Visual Guide to Understanding You Dog’s Every Move --- by --- Arden Moore. “What Dogs Want” is a kind of dictionary, a kind of dog to English dictionary: sort of a kind of “Dogspeak for Dummies” except the paper’s a lot smoother; there are way more real pictures and the book is a lot easier to use. It might be argued that a dog, being a simpler creature than his or her owner, would therefore of necessity have to have a much smaller vocabulary. Dog fanciers would argue the point. Probably anyone who has even voluntarily lived under the same roof with a dog would suggest dogs are way smarter than that.
People who will live with dogs will immediately recognize most of the dog nouns and verbs in this book: the obvious tail-wag; the blissful eye-squint; and the attention-seeking air snapping. And then there’s the weird things that they do which we hardly understand but which we certainly recognized: the canine
Gourmand’s refusing to eat from the bowl; the manipulative bringing of objects; and the inconsiderate hogging of the bed: you will find all these sins attended to here.
This book is fun, fast, and easy to real. You’ll see your own dog in it. You’ll see the dog next door in it. And you’ll understand why those dogs do those things they do. The pictures are big, the illustrations are cute, and your dog will thank you for it. Unless she chews it up first or buries it like a bone. I could go on.

This informative, visual guide interprets 100 postures, expressions, sounds and actions exhibited by dogs. A detailed, glossy colour image accompanies each behaviour (ears down, tail flicking, growling etc) and explanations cover the rationale behind said behaviour.

Vets' notes provide insight into medical causes of certain behaviours and breed boxes shed light on genetic predisposition to specific behavioural tendencies. Arden Moore cross-references each action according to type (submissive, attention-seeking, compulsive, aggressive etc), which she fully explains in a clear appendix.

This book will open any dog owner's eyes to how his/her pet communicates with both humans and other animals.
