I loved this movie! I thought the photography and low sounds of the creaking boards of a ship captured the mystical, tragic, dark qualities of the narrative well. For example, a quote is read from Melville about observing the ocean from the top of the mast, during which the photography perfectly matches the mood. The interviews with historians were excellent. I just can't speak too highly of this film. It made me think about how much I enjoy the American Experience films in general and what a pleasure it is to have them doing this work.

I'm a huge history geek and I typically enjoy the American Experience documentaries but this one was awful. The subject matter was too broad and unfocused. The most unbearable aspect of the show was the ponderous, pretentious public television-cliche voice overs. I actually had to fast-forward at points. I'm reading Moby-Dick and thought it would be interesting to watch this doc. Ugh. Read the book, skip this deathly dull documentary.

I usually don't rate these kind of documentaries this high. I have to say this was outstanding. I would add a spoiler warning to this if you haven't read Nathaniel Philbreck's book about the true story that inspired Moby-Dick to read that first or suffer the consequences. It might spoil Moby-Dick, but I have a hard time believing anyone in the States does't know the basic plot even if they haven't read the novel.

Disappointing, boring, fell asleep several times watching this. Either subject wasn't interesting or Ric Burns doesn't have his brother Ken's touch.
