The corpse in the hotel room appears to be that of a missing LAPD narcotics officer. Rumours abound that he had crossed selling a new drug called Black Ice from Mexico and the LAPD brass are quick to declare his death aside. But Harry Bosch isn't so sure; prompted by odd, inexplicable details from the crime scene, and attraction to the widow, he begins his own investigation. An investigation that takes him over the border to Mexico and into a dangerous labyrinth of shifting identities and deadly corruption.

Another really good Harry Bosch novel - recommended.

The second in the Harry Bosch series and a good, complicated, involving thriller with a final twist.

The second book in a great Harry Bosch series. Connelly is an easy read. But when the pieces of the puzzle begin to click together in the last several chapters, the story becomes a real page turner. As the action picks up, you may find yourself reaching for the seatbelt on your easy chair. My ritual is to read about an hour before bedtime. I stayed up late to finish The Black Ice that night.

Michael Connelly writes while listening to jazz and his alter, Bosch, same. I loved this one although he does get a bit tidier in subsequent books. _____ It’s all Connelly/Bosch all the time. We NEVER leave him and I’m spoiled now. I hate the “Pulp Fiction” derivatives every one tries to market. One needs to BE Bosch just as Connelly needs. I listen to jazz frequently while reading, I mean being. -— Connelly and Bosch are the same personality type, 8 soil, mountain; in the Japanese system. The qualities are as we experience, very briefly: very smart and single-minded of purpose. -— Yeah, it could be boring, but it’s Bosch; and he/you are ALWAYS exciting. Every second with this guy ticks... If these were thrillers I’d wet my pants!

This was his second book. He gets much better later on in his career.

I've now read 2 Bosch novels....The Black Echo and now The Black Ice.

I liked Black Echo quite a bit but this just did not work for me at all. Some have said the twist at the end was good. Maybe it was but by the time I got there I was so bored I just didn't care.

I recommend skipping this one.

Bosch is a great character - dark enough to be interesting, but not too much so.
