One of the best novels by Adriana Trigiani! She wrote a love story that travels from the Italian Alps to Ellis Island and the United States during the early twentieth century. But it's so much more than a love story. One of my favorite, I just didn't want to part with the book, the characters and the readers!

There were moments I thought, "This is a four-star book!" Then it would bog down in excessive descriptions and boring dialogue, and I would think, "This is a two-star book." (Note: The kinds of conversations we have with our spouses about everyday life -- the sort of "what's for lunch, honey?" discussions that are a necessary part of living in the same household -- do not translate into interesting dialogue in a novel.) There are some lovely moments in The Shoemaker's Wife, and I appreciate the fact that the book is inspired by the author's own grandparents' love story. But there was just so much unnecessary, uninspiring detail. At times the reader gets practically moment-by-moment accounts of Enza's or Ciro's days, and then suddenly four years have passed with no information at all about how the characters fared in those intervening years. So, I settle at three stars, and suggest to future readers that there's a fairly good story here. Just be prepared to skim the boring parts.
