For 10 years Arlene has kept her promises, and God has kept His end of the bargain. Until now. When an old schoolmate from Possett turns up at Arlene's door in Chicago asking questions about Jim Beverly, former quarterback and god of Possett High, Arlene's break with her former hometown is forced to an end. At the same time, Burr, her long-time boyfriend, has raised an ultimatum: introduce him to her family or consider him gone. Arlene loves him dearly but knows her lily white (not to mention deeply racist) Southern Baptist family will not understand her relationship with an African American boyfriend. Reluctantly, Arlene bows to the pressure, and she and Burr embark on the long-avoided road trip back home. As Arlene digs through guilt and deception, her patched-together alibi begins to unravel, and she discovers how far she will go for love and a chance at redemption.

When I read Ms. Jackson's first book (Between, Georgia) it had just been published and I had been reading a blog by one of the author's friends who had recommended it - in fact, praised it to the skies. To my surprise, I loved the book - I had made assumptions about it (Southern girls, romance, family drama) and thought that it would be a boring and stupid novel. It most certainly not stupid. It was so good that I requested this second novel from the library before it had been acquired. Gods in Alabama did not disappoint; it was just as good as the first. The characterizations are sharp (although the boyfriend/fiance is just a bit too saintly), the plot is well devised and the story line draws you on to the end. It was completely enjoyable and just as un-put-downable.
I think maybe comments were not possible when I first read this book and that's why I didn't review it until 10 years after reading. However, I just re-read it and wanted to rave about it.

This was a very well written book. As the cover claims, it is one of those books you want to keep reading and at the same time, want to recommend to your friends! An unusual, but a good read!
