I found Dr. Bernstein's book very helpful when I first read it ten or so years ago. It was much more useful in assisting me to maintain good control than the ADA diet recommendations ever were. Recently, I have also found the book "The Obesity Code" by Dr. Jason Fung very helpful. After more than 20 years of living with diabetes I am interested in what works. Although the advice given by Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Fung does not follow the conventional advice of the medical establishment they offer much needed insight into how we have ended up a country where diabetes and obesity are epidemic. More importantly they provide information about how to reverse diabetes and obesity. I highly recommend both of these books.

2) JANET SCHNEIDER - There is an agenda underlying virtually everything you encounter in life if it involves people, and it’s more about their own welfare than yours. The bigger the issue, the bigger the agenda. Janet M. Schneider’s review of this book is an example. She attaches her name to the Tampa Bay VA with no indication whatever as to her official capacity, probably because it’s medically de minimis. Is she a nurse? A doctor? An administrator? Or maybe Tampa has hired a part-time librarian who moonlights as a book reviewer for Library Journal and call center for vets. What gives her the expertise to say Richard Beaser’s book is “far superior”. I doubt she even has diabetes but she is part of what I call the pharmedico-industrial complex as a nod to President Eisenhower’s military-industrial complex, and as such is more interested in safeguarding the status quo than anything else. Just recall the Phoenix VA scandal. Why else would she take the time to write a patently biased review of a book that goes directly against the grain of the establishment, especially with diabetes and cholesterol? Her statement, “His most radical departure from established medical practice is his diet plan, which recommends high fat, high protein, and a minimum of carbohydrates advice that conflicts with that given by the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association” confirms her mainstream status. She fails to mention that the more famous Dr Atkins weight-loss diet, which has been around since the 1970s, is virtually identical and proven to reduce weight due to carbohydrate restriction. That also happens to be critical for diabetics and they now market it for diabetes. But more importantly, before insulin was ‘invented’ in 1919, diabetes was an absolute death sentence: without treatment the life expectancy of a juvenile diabetic was less than a year from the onset of symptoms. And many died. The few treatment facilities that would accept diabetics did so with the goal being to keep them alive as long as possible in the hope that a drug or cure was not far off. This included Dr. Elliott Joslin’s patients he treated from 1893 to 1919 that documented the lack of progress in the clinical treatment of diabetes. Dr. Frederick M. Allen was one of the few who could keep diabetics alive but it was at a huge cost to life quality: a normal teenage diet of 2200 calories a day was reduced to 400 and contained virtually no carbohydrates. Some survived beyond the 1-year sentence, 5-10 years.

Exceptional book on the subject. Excellent not only for diabetics and pre-diabetics, but also for the population in general.

Dr. Bernstein began writing on this topic many, many years ago and has for the most part appropriately updated (but not totally... for example, he clearly is not lipids expert, like Mary Enig).

If more interested in a much shorter book with less technical details, the Diabetes Diet cookbook by this author (half as long) is a very good option.

A very good companion book would be "Low Carb High Fat Diet Revolution".

I had an epiphany when I read that carbohydrates cause blood sugar spikes and you will never be able to control your glucose unless you cut way back on carbs.

So, I followed his low-carb diet and dropped from 205 to 165 within 6 months. For the last year and a half I've kept the weight off without every feeling hungry. And my A1C went from 7.50 to 5.0!

This is one of the most important health books I have read.
