Sentimental and occasionally melodramatic, to be sure, yet the noir-ish atmosphere and fantasy elements are nigh impossible to resist. Well-acted all around and, in its own quiet way, daring. So few films -- then or now -- bother to depict the disabled, least of all in such an unsparing yet respectful way. Would make a compelling double feature with 1998's Theory of Flight, an underrated British drama of a differently abled girl who has all the usual naughty, romantic thoughts.
