the view from 2017:
is he searching for a face as inspiration for a movie? or is he living in a state of lust? he wants everything - especially what he can't have. if he can't have sex with the one he wants he'll have sex with the one he's with. women are objects of his desire but they have no meaning beyond that. he is jealous if he is not the focus of their attention. he withdraws and abandons at a time of emotional crisis. but the women are the ones with power in this film - he needs to see himself reflected by them but they know who they are and are able to move away from his gaze.

A recently divorced movie director is looking for a woman that would be suitable for his next film, although he actually has no idea about the film. He must identify the woman first and then build the ideas for the film. While looking he goes through two romantic relationships with two different types of women. Is this a film about the difficulty of relating in the modern world? This is a Michelangelo Antonioni film, which means the viewer will have to determine his own meaning of the film. Antonioni is considered by many to be one of the top three directors of the second half of the twentieth century. The other two were Bergman and Kieslowski. Antonioni and Bergman both died on July 30, 2007, just like Thomas Jefferson and John Adams who both died on July 4, 1826.

This is a 1982 Italian drama film written, directed, and edited by Michelangelo Antonioni.
The film is about an Italian filmmaker searching for a woman to play the leading role in his next film, and also in his life.
The film is quite slow and there is not much in the story with some gratuitous sex scenes.
This film was made when Antonioni was nearing seventy.
So this is one of those autumnal movies, I suppose.
The aging director seems to be floating into his fading youth with nostalgy.

The booklet essay penned by John Powers may well be the feeblest example of film criticism I've ever read. Nothing but self-congratulatory trendiness.
