This is a cool book with lots of lists, most of them quite unique and filled with trivia you won't find anywhere else. There's a list of dangerous tourist spots (New Smyrna Beach, FL is on this list as North America's top beach for shark attacks from 24 attacks in 2008). There's a list of the longest-lived empires (the Mayan Empire lasted three times as long as the Roman Empire 3,540 years versus 1,119 years). There's a list of dowries and bride prices from around the world (in ancient Germany trees were planted at a girl's birth and given as her dowry for building furniture for her new home). There's a list of places you might find extremophiles i.e. creatures who can survive extreme environments. There's also a list of helpful household spirits that includes a domovoi, zashiki-warashi, tomte, clurichaun, yunwi dijunsti, hob, bes, boggart, aitvaras, kamui-fuchi, and zao-jun. I enjoyed it enough I bought a copy. I can't think of higher praise than that.
