Claude Chabrol crafts a sly moral fable about a provincial boy who comes to live with his sophisticated bohemian cousin in Paris. Through these seeming opposites, Chabrol conjures a piercing, darkly comic character study that questions notions of good and evil, love and jealousy, and success in the modern world. A mirror image of Le Beau Serge, Les Cousins recasts that film's stars, Jean-Claude Brialy and Gřard Blain, in startlingly reversed roles.

I enjoyed the look and feel of this early black and white New Wave film set in Paris at the end of the 50s. but it was rather predictable and more melodramatic than dramatic. It's definitely watchable for cinema buffs, but for me Chabrol is not up there with New Wavers like Varda, Malle, Truffaut, or Goddard.

Brialy et Blain sont excellent dans leur role. Ce film demontre aussi la societe etudiante favorisee et sa debauche dans les fins des annees 50. Encore un bon film de Chabrol.

I really enjoyed this not very well-known French new wave film. Country cousin visits city cousin, gets swept up in city life and then decides to buckle down and study. But how much can you control your life?
