Good detective stories. It seems corruption permeates all aspects of life in this series, but the detective stories are so interesting that it pulled me in and kept me there to the end.

Well shoot! I really enjoyed this - he's so Italian.ly smooth, but not :-) ... Stories are good, acting is great. I watch a great deal of Euro-mystery-tv and enjoy most of them. Read they didn't keep Zen because they already had a sufficent number of mystery series with male inspector (etc) leads. But this was different - it brings in a warmth that is area/culture related, missing in the more reserved/chilly northern feeling of some of the others. Sigh.

A very good adaptation of three Didbin books. Good acting and location, a little taste of Italian politics.

Classy, clever & stylish. The plot-lines are actually plausible & no gratuitous gore (which is so fashionable these days) ... yet it manages to hold your attention. Beautiful scenes of Rome are an added bonus. My only complaint??...only 3 episodes so far :( ...hope there are more to come!!

Zen is a spectacular crime drama. It is a bit confusing in the beginning because there are all these characters with British accents playing Italian detectives, crime bosses and government ministers. The director wisely decided to dispense with the typically forced and unconvincing accents. Unfortunately this is the only season which exists and to this date there is no second series planned for Zen. However, it is reported that the producers hope to make further adaptations via another broadcaster.

i have tried and tried again to get into this series, but to no avail. Reading the reviews before mine i'm wondering if i was just missing something. I will have to go back and review one final time to see if i can get into it. (I'll keep you posted)

Really good Detective Episodes! Very interesting landscape and Italian flavour throughout. Italy seems to have overwhelming corruption in the gov't and all the way to the police. Zen has high integrity that is at odds with the politics and the pressure that is put on him to steer his cases to certain conclusions no matter what. It takes all his ingenuity to come out on top in these seemingly impossible situations. It is a matter of his survival on every level!
I hope there is a sequal coming!

Latin counterweight to Scandanavian police procedurals, ie Kurt Wallender, Martin Beck.

Really good detective made-for-tv thriller. I really want to see more of this kind of production.

Fine cop thriller, in three longish episodes: well-written and, under all the gritty criminality, not devoid of subtle layers, understatement and nuance. There's even a nicely-flavoured romance that isn't all brazen hustle and bold approaches, Hollywood-style. I'm not sure from the first episode if the hero-detective's supposed to be shy or tongue-tied for having been burned by his failed marriage, or if it's clumsy acting; probably the former. Will see in what comes (had to return it). The accents don't bother me one bit. What might irk or puzzle is the tourist-board settings: despite the cell-phones and fast cars, there's not a high-rise in sight, his office and all buildings are antique, and most streets are of the cobblestoned sort. This cuts the realism a bit, although it may be an attempt to raise viewership by appealing to those who watched ‘Dynasty’ for the gowns, if you get my drift. Yet, for TV fare, it’s still BBC, so the standards are at least high. Let me underscore it: this one’s better than most cop series. (PS: All 3 episodes are very well worth watching)
