Very disappointing film because I really wanted to explore YSL's fashion more than anything. But this movie is all over the place. What I got was a movie that gave pretty much equal time to YSL's fashion, his life, his husband, their art collection, selling their art collection, his homes, his friends, and so on. What's worse, very little is placed in context of the world around him and the timeline zigs and zags all over the place too. There is some very cool archival footage - like a massive show of his collection in a stadium with hundreds of models - but that, like so much in this film, is just presented without little explanation, context, or connection. Hope someone makes a better YSL documentary some day.

I watched and enjoyed "L'amour Fou" for the first time yesterday but today read at nyt.com that its narrator, Pierre Berge, has just passed away. R.I.P.

The touted subject of the film is fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, but Berge as long-time lover and business partner is an interesting character as well. (He's certainly quotable!) The film is beautifully shot, the residence interiors are exquisite, and seeing a French president at the designer's funeral helps sum up what Saint Laurent was to France and the world.

Whether one is interested in fashion or not this is a really extraordinary film about the decades long love affair between Yves and Pierre: two really interesting creative people, who shared a life of beauty as expressed in Yves' designs and their private art collection that is to be sold on Yves' death. Truly wonderous !

Beautiful spare documentary on Pierre Berge and his life with Yves St. Laurent. Intermingled with scenes of the Christie's auction of their serious collection of objets d'art is the story of how together they built the house of couture and lived their lives. Moving yet not overdone or trashy. Worth the watch.
