This is a 1997 Spanish psychological thriller co-written, co-scored and directed by Alejandro Amenábar.
The script is fantastically contrived for the sake of complexity, but it is profoundly thought-provoking in the sense that life is what exists in your mind after all.

Alternating between tense close-ups of eyes and faces and fanciful cityscapes writer/director Alejandro Amenábar’s slow-burning psychological mind game challenges the ways we distinguish truth from fantasy. With its serpentine plot twists and shifting timelines he keeps his audience off guard even as his characters struggle to make sense of it all. Sadly, with such an intriguing build-up it comes as somewhat of a letdown when Amenábar’s big reveal turns out to be a tired old sci-fi cliché that even a cast of beautiful people and some evocative camerawork fail to reinvent. But to be fair, Tom Cruz’s American remake, "Vanilla Sky", is reported to be even worse.

Shakespeare, Total Recall-based on Dick's We can remember it for you wholesale, and Alejandro Amenábar all touch on the concept of life as a dream. Amenabar's story touches on death, cryogenics, friendship and loyalty and the importance we give to beauty. As a matter of fact cryogenics is what, Amenabar says was the impulse for this story. A thoroughly mind bending story from what ever your life perspective.

I watched Cameron Crowe's remake of this movie, "Vanilla Sky", with Tom Cruise and again featuring the Drop. Dead. Gorgeous. Penélope Cruz (meowww... WOOF WOOF WOOF!!!) prior to watching this one. The remake does not stray far from the premise of this one, altering only a few minor character details. An excellent psychological thriller.

This is psychological thriller touching upon science, future, mental disorder, narcissism, and murder. The plot is very complex and not easy to follow. One needs to pay great attention to catch the gist of the film. In Spanish with subtitles.
