Better than a standard WWII morale builder, this movie can hardly be said to be a recruiting pitch, as most of the cast winds up dead. Notable are the performances of two supporting actors, J. Carrol Naish, who specialized in ethnic characters, as an Italian POW, and the entirely believable Rex Ingram as a Sudanese sergeant who knows the desert like the back of his hand. Lloyd Bridges and Dan Duryea shine as well, and the music score is excellent. It's shot in stark black and white with shadows that look almost like a film noir. Recommended.

Why not tie up the hands of the prisoners?

SAHARA is a must-see for Humphrey Bogart fans. Bogey plays U.S. Army Master Sergeant Joe Gunn in charge of a M3 tank and a ragtag band -- including British Commonwealth soldiers, a Free French, a Sudanese sergeant and two prisoners of war, one Italian and one member of the Nazi Luftwaffe -- fleeing from the rout of the British by General Rommel at Tobruk. Pound for pound I don't think there was a better Hollywood tough guy than Bogart. What was he, a welterweight? He could've even been a super lightweight (140 lbs). But in a street fight, at least if it took place on the silver screen, I want Bogey on my side instead of the heavyweight John Wayne. What's interesting about the film is how humanely the soldiers treat one another. I'm sure this is a Hollywood gloss of the period, but I appreciated it.

Adventure movie. Even better than Escape From Zahrain, or Flight of the Phoenix. For me, the most memorable scene is a conversation between a WASP (white, Anglo-Saxon, protestant) and a African Muslim about whether all Muslims have four wives. With knowledge, mutual respect and even friendship becomes possible. Worth a second or even third viewing. Mind you, this is a WWII flick with Bogart as the lead action figure.

I'm not big on war movies but Bogart headlining in this one made at the height of WWII made it worth the trip.

One of the great war movies of all time! Bogie is outstanding! The whole cast is colorful and interesting. Like many of the old movies, it centers on the dialogue and story rather than being vulgar as possible.Super stuff!

Other: A very good world war 2 movie. With Bogart playing the hero of course. This is better than most WW 2 movies of the time. Done during the war. Give it a look, worth the time.
