One of my favourites, now reading it for the second time. Evocative story. I felt transported to Ethiopia and into the lives of the characters. The section in America is an eye-opener on discrimination in medicine, not only for the patients but for the medical staff as well.

I was fascinated by the area and time period of this book. I thought it was a very Interesting book but IMO it could have been 200+ pages shorter. There was way too much detail on the surgical procedures, medical problems and also other descriptions. The story would have been just as good without much of it.

This is among my favorite novels. Set in the 1960-70’s in Ethopia and 1980’s in America, it’s the story of twin brothers born of an Indian nun and a British surgeon. The journey of the brothers’ lives is one of love and betrayal. Ultimately, one brother must entrust his life to his brother and father. Truly, a remarkable story.

Read in Sept 2017.......I couldn't wait to get back to reading this when life got in the way. This is one that's going on my favourites list. Found this on my shelves in the basement, and read it so that I could get it out of there....but it will stay! (Note: will lend to Alice F, is in the back of my escape, Oct 14 2017)

Never has a book brought me to tears, or made my heart well up as Cutting for Stone did. Being a reader who doesn't typically enjoy overly descriptive writing, Verghese's style was so captivating. Medical terminology and unfamiliar language references aside, I found this book so beautifully written. Yes-I had to goggle a few words to grasp meaning, but it didn't stop me from turning pages! Often I found myself rereading a phrase, a sentence, or paragraph over again because of the amazing image it created in my mind. This story pulls one into a world that takes many different directions but always brings you back to the heart of the man telling his story. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ. Don't let the size of this book keep you from reading it.

Absolute fantastic read. Don't be intimidated by it's size. I didn't want it
to end. It ranks with the best.

Follow this Indian family through their lives in Ethiopia. Thoroughly engaging. I couldn't put it down. Has medical/physician theme throughout. Characters will win you over and you'll want to see them all succeed!
