After escaping Germany during WWII, Jack and Sadie Rosenblum, together with their baby daughter, settle into a life of acting "English." In post-war England, however, no golf club will admit a Rosenblum. So Jack hatches a wild idea: he'll build his own. It's an obsession Sadie does not share, particularly when Jack relocates them to a thatched roof cottage in Dorset to embark on his project.

A lot of wallowing in the first half, but things look better in the last part. This is the story of a Jewish couple who escape Germany to England and attempt to make a new life. They move to a country town and the husband decides to build a golf course.

A delightful read about finding yourself while trying to become someone else. All the golf details slowed me down a bit as I don't play but really a wonderful story that I thoroughly enjoyed!

When Mr. Rosenblum moves his family to England to escape WWII, he decides to go all the way and become as English as possible. He almost accomplishes total immersion when he finds he cannot do the one thing he desires the most - join a golf and country club. So he decides that if he can't join one, he will build one. And one can't help but cheer the little man on while he struggles to achieve his goal while trying to move the proverbial mountain. And when others come to his aid, he finds the community he and his wife were always looking for. This delightful read makes one believe in wooly pigs, gigantic tortes, and that one person can make something worthwhile in this world.

A little slow to start, Jack Rosenblum, entrepreneur, captures your attention and gains your enthusiasm for his new project, a golf course. A great story of enduring love, developing friendships, and overcoming prejudice to achieve your dreams.

I loved this book. I entered a whole world, it really brightened my week. Characters are great, love the details, and of course it makes things seem entirely possible.
