The movie handles various teenage issues with broad humor and employs comics, Claymation, and slapstick. Lane loses his adored girlfriend to a cheating school rival/ ski champ. His family is no help: his mother is busy cooking bizarre meals, his little brother is a genius with a postal addiction, and the father has a running feud with the fearless paperboy who's bad aim keeps the glass glaziers in business. Lane has a devoted friend who's been 7+ years in high school. The Asian brothers who dress, and sound like Howard Cosell constantly try to drag race with Lane are quite funny. The new French girl in the neighborhood maybe what Lane needs to push Lane to attempt the ski contest his evil rival suggests, besides fix his muscle car, and forget Beth his old girlfriend. A sweet goofy movie that is perfect for family movie night.

Silly and maybe even a little stupid, I love this movie! John Cusack is wonderful as Lane, who feels that his life is over when he is dumped by his girlfriend. En route to ending it all, however, he encounters obstacles that may just persuade him to change his mind!

Hilarious cult classic on a high school romance gone awry. Get off the ski slopes and brush up on your International language of love.

Angsty teenager Lane Meyer (John Cusack) has just been unceremoniously and abruptly dumped by his girlfriend, Beth (played by Nightmare on Elm Street's Amanda Wyss), and decides that life without her is no longer worth living. But like most teenagers, he eventually understands that there are other fish in the sea! In my opinion, Better Off Dead is a must-see 80s movie. It's wacky, fun, hilarious, and heartfelt all at the same time. Word of warning: Lane's breakup causes him to be suicidal, and although the subject is handled lightly and with plenty of humor, this movie may be a tough one for some.

I can't think of any better way to say this other than that some people should avoid this movie due to the suicide attempts included. If you can overlook those scenes or see humor in them and also enjoy really ridiculous humor (Sixteen Candles, Dumb and Dumber and Wet Hot American Summer come to mind), this is a very funny winter movie and teen comedy. Fun fact: Kim Darby, John Cusack's mother in this movie, played Mattie Ross (the teenage girl) in the original True Grit. Better Off Dead is rated PG, but is probably best for teens and up.

Is it me or is this where Seth Macfarlane got the idea for Family Guy? Akward family (with cutaways), brilliant youngest child.....etc....??

Whenever anyone asks for $2 I always think of this movie.
Classic 80's cool crowd vs. the misfit. Life is hard for Lane when is younger brother is partying with older women and his mum wears an Aardvark suit.

Ummm... I don't think I get what others see in this. I really adore Curtis Armstrong but the humor is so forced, and you can see it coming that I could only say ... I'D be Better Off Dead and than watching this...

One of my favorite 80's movies. Have to revisit it every so often. Definitely my favorite John Cusack film. "I want my two dollars." I'll never forget that line. And for another offbeat, fun film, also from 1985, please try "Real Genius" with Val Kilmer. Have seen it countless times and love it!! KCLS has it.

Cheesy, but cute & sometimes funny movie. released in 1985. I liked 'The sure Thing ' a lot better. But the Camero is awesome. I think it's a 67'
