This documentary-style drama tried to solve the actual murder that took place on July 5, 1950.
A Scicilian bandit called "Salvatore Giuliano" was shot dead.
His bullet-riddled corpse was found facedown in a courtyard in Castelvetrano---a town and comune in the province of Trapani, Sicily, Italy.
Filming in the exact locations and enlisting a cast of native Scicilians once impacted by the real Giuliano, director Francesco Rosi harnessed the facts and myths surrounding the bandit's death to create a startling exposure of Sicily and the tangled relations between its citizens, the Mafia, and government officials.
Although the film seems to reveal a compelling story, Rosi said in the accompanying interview that he had a trouble in enlisting the local woman in Montelepre---a town in the province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
Why?
It is because in 1960 Italian women in general didn't want to be in a film.
He wanted many local women for the scene.
So he had to ask the prostitutes from Palermo to come for the scene in which the women gathered to liberate the men in the square.
In any case, this film is quite interesting in the sense it established Rose's reputation and assured his place in cinema history.

This is an incredible film. The photography is amazing; if you lose track of the history, just watch the background and the faces. This was filmed in the locations were the events took place...you can't see this world today. It's gone. Plus this is a film in which you see that political life is exactly the same as today. I love this film. It's so ...true.
