Add a CommentA solid if a bit outlandish WW2 commando movie where German paratroopers much like the Gran Sasso raid where Colonel Skorzeny snatched Mussolini from his mountaintop prison would try to kidnap Winston Churchill to neogiate an end to the war. There are good performance by Micheal Caine,Robert Duvall,Donald Sutherland and Donald Pleasence(very creepy as Himmler). Interestingly the German commandos are shown as war weary professionals not fanatical Nazis as earlier war movies would do. Some good combat sequences near the end and an interesting surprise ending. In some ways it can be seen as a template for Tarantino's very wobbly dark comedy and cartoon history WW2 movie from 2009.
A World War 2 adventure film that is somewhat unique in that the main characters are Germans attempting to kidnap Churchill. Notable non-Germans Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, and Donald Plesence all play German officers and they're joined by Donald Sutherland, with a somewhat distracting Irish accent. If you enjoyed films like "The Guns of Navarone," "Where Eagles Dare," and "Kelly's Heroes," you'll like this. The cast is good and the direction by John Sturges, who also did "The Great Escape," is solid. Based on a novel by Jack Higgins. Look for a pre-"Dallas" Larry Hagman in a small role.
Made in the 70's I'm not sure how well this has aged- it does have some terrific performance by Robert Duvall, Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland. It's a unique take on the typical World War 2 film, and if you're a fan of war films in general, it's worth checking out.
INTERESTINGLY INTRIGUING FILM.
Would kidnapping Churchill had made any difference to the outcome of WWII, when madmen for their own personal ego, power, prestige & glory, GAMBLING the destiny of nations & the lives of millions of people, as if the nations can NOT exist in harmony, with out the madmen's insatiable appetite for personal "glory"?
In the end, the expendable people, always promised LIBERTY are forced to pay with their lives, in the name of defending the "fatherland", while the "fatherland & liberty" are sacrificed to accommodate madmen's egos.
