Despite its relatively low budget, this portrait of Korean War soldiers grappling with moral and racial issues while trying to stay alive remains one of the director's most gripping, realistic depictions of the blood and guts of war, as well as a reflection of Fuller's social conscience.

It is a war film directed by Samuel Fuller.
Fuller's direction turns a trite story into a vivid and exciting movie, the action scenes of which are terrific, belying the movie's very low budget.
To survive the madness of war, you're supposed to have a ruthless individualism.
Battle is a chaotic, deadly affair, and nobody in the film has much idea of why they fight.
The film touches American racism when a North Korean Communist prisoner baits a black soldier in conversation with accounts of American society's Jim Crow rules.
The North Korean soldier also makes the first-ever mention, in a Hollywood film, of the internment of Japanese Americans in World War II.
The ending clearly says, "There is no end to this story."
Indeed, this film was made during the Korean war.

This is a gritty and realistic war movie. It doesn't shy away from the horrors and waste of war; especially the Korean War. The Sgt. character was played especially well.

If you liked this classic as much as I do,.. then be sure check out 'A Walk in the Sun' and 'The Young Lions', which are also very good war movies (but set in WW2).

Samuel Fuller had a way to show how war effects the typical soldier without the Hollywood blood and guts of today. He shows how combat can change someone's view on life, their fellow soldiers and the people of the country they are in, in a very short time. This is my second favorite Fuller film just after The Big Red One. He even mentions the 1/16th again in this movie.
