Claustrophobic and chilling, this story about the final days of an Israeli military outpost in southern Lebanon brings both the terror and outrage of war uncomfortably close. While their comrades die around them, the remaining soldiers continue to receive conflicting orders from high command.......should they retreat or stay put? With tempers at the breaking point and nerves frayed by daily bombings they begin to question their purpose in being there in the first place. Great use of confined spaces and dim lighting to maintain an air of tension.....both physical and psychological......even at the quietest times.

An OK movie, very suspenseful but very slow paced. Also you have to be a very fast reader as the subtitles are blazingly fast. FYI…the funny helmet covers are for breaking up the helmet silhouette.

This is a superb film on all fronts---direction, acting, and cinematography. While the subject of BEAUFORT is far different than that of Cedar’s later film FOOTNOTE (2011), the film similarly explores an intense aspect of the human condition. Here the viewer is plunged into the landscape of a tense military defense operation in the waning days of Israel’s 18 year occupation (1982-2000) of various locations in Lebanon. The setting is a mountain top fortification which the Israelis have constructed adjacent to a centuries old medieval citadel from the Crusades from which the fortification takes its name, Beaufort. The soldiers at Beaufort are 19-20 year old military “grunts” who have been left to guard the fortress as the Israelis slowly evacuate their positions throughout Lebanon. Cedar explores the ambiguities and ironies of war not from an action filled battlefield but rather from the claustrophobic confines of the soldiers’ bunkers as they attempt to defend their position on the mountain top against Lebanese mortar shellings and missile strikes.. Overall, this is a most compelling and intense examination of life under extreme stress and pressure, with all of the ambiguities and ironies of a wartime environment.

Not too many action for this war movie, and so I was bored.
