This first season was not aimed at children. The dialogue and acting are natural and effective -- better, for example, than Raymond Burr's subsequent PERRY MASON. The villains are sordid and violent. Phyllis Coates was Lois Lane only in this first season. The series was later degraded to children's fare.
Superman started out as a comic book, then moved to weekly radio episodes, then to weekly mini-episodes shown in movie theaters, and finally -- where it all comes superbly together -- to TV. Season 1 was originally broadcast in 1951. If you've never seen the first episode, the one where Superman's origins are explained, borrow this DVD just for that! An added bonus? "Superman and the Mole Men", the first full-length Superman movie ever shown in theaters, and designed as a lead-in to draw interest to the TV series. Recommended.
