Surprisingly good thriller from Cannon Films (really?! Yep, THOSE guys!) that has Christopher Reeve as a journalist trying to get a good story published in the magazine he works for in the heart of Chicago (although, the film was actually made in Toronto). He decides to do a 'Day in the Life of a Pimp' but cannot find a way to get access to one even through prostitutes. Eventually he decides to write a completely fictional story out of his own head that receives high praise from his boss and coworkers.

Once the story is published and out on newsstands, others believe the story to be real and an actual account of one Leo Smalls Jr. AKA 'Fast Black' (Morgan Freeman in a role that earned him his first OSCAR Nomination).

Supporting Reeve and Freeman are Kathy Baker as 'Fast Black's' #1 girl on the street, Mimi Rogers as Reeve's girlfriend, Andre Gregory as Reeve's boss, and Jay Patterson as the Attorney trying to place both Reeve and Freeman behind bars.

It truly is a gritty look at the dark world lurking on the streets after dark, much in a similar vein to 1982's 'Vice Squad'. The film is also wonderfully underscored by Miles Davis. Although Cannon Films is not known for 'high quality movie-making', this film is a standout in their catalogue with wonderful acting, great script, and very good cinematography.

Highly recommended!

Morgan Freeman got an Oscar nom and a Golden Globe nom for best supporting actor in this thriller. This is the film that rocketed him to fame. Kathy Baker would soon get Emmy and Golden Globe noms and wins for best actress in the highly successful TV series Picket Fences. And this film showed that Christopher Reeve could do something after his successful run in Superman I, II, and III. The film is inspired by the story of a major journalist that fabricated stories – until he got caught and fired. Hey even today, Brian Williams has been suspended for making up stuff.

Strong performances. Freeman is terrifying without being one-note.
