An adaptation of Margaret Rosenthal's 1992 non-fiction "The Honest Courtesan" which was based on Rosenthal's Yale graduate student dissertation on Italian Literature on "Venetian Courtesan, Veronica Franco" in 1977. Wonder how the ladies breathed encased in those tight breast bindings while walking on those chopines back in the days. Anyway, excellent romantic film on a chapter of budding feminism in a world ruled by men and religious zealots. Can't help but to compare with Japanese courtesans or Oirans (花魁) who must master a variety of artistic skills. Per wiki: "the traditional arts of sadō (Japanese tea ceremony), ikebana (flower arranging), and calligraphy. Oiran also learned to play the koto, shakuhachi, tsuzumi (hand drum), and shamisen. Clients also expected them to be well-read and able to converse and write with wit and elegance. Note: Naomi Watts played one of the oppressed woman and was barely recognizable. Her break through act came in 2001's Mulholland Drive.

I would have to disagree with some of the comments below! This is actually a really great movie AND it does have historical value. Veronica Franco was a real courtesan in 16th century Venice who was tried for witchcraft during the Spanish Inquisition. Now that we got that out of the way, I will agree with a comment below that says to watch it with a girlfriend, my friend and I had a blast watching this together!! Great for girls night indeed. Veronica is a beautiful and extremely well spoken woman. I enjoyed the character portrayal very much, including her romance with the handsome Marco Venier.

There was no historian on duty while making this movie, it is more like a fairy tail.

This movie is mediocre at best. It is not very well made at all, but I have seen far worse. The story is decent and the acting is adequate, but this is no work of art. All in all, it is a pretty typical period-style romance film about female empowerment. This is one of the those movies to watch with your girlfriend, if you know what I mean - that is, if you're comfortable watching second rate sex scenes together.

I don't think I'd call this movie "totally awesome" as some reviewers have (unless you want to see lots of 'B' grade fleshy romps on the bed). The story was entertaining enough, but in true Hollywood high-drama style the courteasan (sp?) was made out to be so virtuous as to be completely unreal.

Yes, she actually lived, and yes she made her way as a prostitute to the rich and famous, which was the only role open to a poor woman of that time ... but a role-model to young women??? Hmmmm ...

An engaging movie about love and women empowerment. I enjoyed it thoroughly, one of my favorite movies

Lots of quotes (and poetry) in IMDb but not necessary these below, advice from mommie Paola played by J. Bisset:
Daughter, you have reached too high. I told you, marriage is a contract. To a man of Marco's station, it has nothing to do with love. But you can still have Marco. But not in wedlock. There's an alternative to marriage. You'll become a courtesan.
I had hoped to buy you a good marriage. But your father... drank away your dowry. Your brother must buy his posting. And I am too old. It is you... who must support us now.
First secret of all great courtesans: You must know pleasure... to give pleasure. Beauty is a manifestation of the divine. That theory built the Sistine Chapel, and it'll do the same for you. Height is an advantage to women as well as men. Carriage creates the first impression.

The emperor Pericles relied more for policy on his mistress... than he ever did on his lieutenants. Courtesans, my dear, are the most educated women in the world. A courtesan is a force of nature in a civilized cloak. Any chambermaid can flop down,
take off her shirt... and men will come. Your true power comes from something much deeper than beauty. Cleopatra knew that. Theodosia. Aspasia. She could seduce a man at 20 paces... without revealing an inch of flesh.
With her mind. Desire begins in the mind. ... make him believe that he is the only man in the universe.
In order to choose your lovers wisely, you need to understand men. No matter their shape or size... position or wealth... they all dream... of the temptress. The irresistible... unapproachable Venus... who quickly turns pliable maiden when they've had a hard day.

You can't be squeamish. If you don't enjoy it... they'll smell it, like a dog smells fear. And they'll hate you for it.
Use your fingers lightly... like feathers. Your tongue, like licking sweets. Your teeth, with restraint. Just enough... to keep him wanting more. It's wanting... that keeps us alive.
It's a treacherous game you play, my little idiot. You outdid me long ago. I know that. And the irony is, it's not because... you're prettier than I was, because you're not. Nor that you're a better lay, because you aren't. It's because you're smarter. You have a gift. Don't throw it away.
- For God's sake, haven't I done enough?
He's a client like the others. Love him and lose.
