The absolute WORST of De Palma's mainstream studio films. The script is often insultingly bad: between the car chases and cop cars ending up in the lake, the movie could almost be called Smokey & the Bandit with Nose Bleeds. And there are lots of bleeding noses here, which at first seems funny, then quickly becomes GROSS!! A terrible, stupid waste of fine or at least capable actors. One thing stands out about The Fury, quite apart from its awfulness: as in his previous film, Carrie, Amy Irving plays the sole survivor. In Carrie, she was a bedridden, traumatized wreck of a person plagued by nightmares; in The Fury, she is an avenging angel who gets revenge in an incredibly gory final scene. I guess that's progress... sort of.

As the good doctor says, what society can't integrate it seeks to destroy, in this case two teenagers with remarkable telepathic & psychokinetic powers locked in the crosshairs of a top secret government organization trying to harness & control them. On a resume like Brian De Palma's this one may or may not stand out, but I think it's outlandishly good, at points hilarious (here's looking at you, Bob & Marty...!), with a final 20-30 minutes as badass as any you're likely to find in the genre. Kirk Douglas turns in a nuanced & impassioned performance, but it's the dark transformation of the young pair that makes this top shelf cinema. Five stars with inexplicable nosebleeds! CR

Kinda fun in a 70's Carrie meets Firestarter sort of way...
