Both versions of Insomnia are enjoyable, but together, they are an interesting and unusual example of original vs. Hollywood remake that goes not from outstanding to bad, but from outstanding to good. The original is a character study with a mystical edge, which does not lose its grip on a compelling story. Nolan's remake is mostly a traditional police procedural, in which things are S-P-E-L-L-E-D O-U-T for you, without, in fairness, going overboard. Skarsgard gives the performance of his career, whereas Pacino, whose performance is better than most he has given in recent years, is still on the hammy side. Watch this one first, and the remake second, and see what you think.
Directed by Erik Skjoldbjærg in 1997, this 97-minute Norwegian thriller shows a police detective investigating a murder in a town located above the Arctic Circle.
The investigation goes horribly wrong when he mistakenly shoots his partner and subsequently attempts to cover up his bungle.
This film closes with an open-ended and unsatisfying conclusion.
The 2002 remake by Christopher Nolan appears much better in terms of storyline and ending.
Cannot rate this film, I did not watch it. I do not like subtitles, I want to watch a movie not read it!
I have no idea of the American version, nor will I seek it out. This Norwegian film is supposed to be 'atmospheric', I found it simply boring, poorly filmed, boring, somewhat incomprehensible. Like the main actor, S. Skargard but disappointed in this of his early films. So bored I never finished.
The original 'Insomnia' from Sweden featuring Stellan Skarsgård as an enigmatic lead detective.
This film was one of the originators of 'Scandinavian Noir'.
Weird. Scandinavian, 'nuff said.
Haven't seen this particular movie but I did see the Al Pacino version which is in English. Is the film from Norway in Norwecian or English?

Way, way, way, way better than the Hollywood version with Al Pacino.
