I feel like I would love this book if I had a long weekend and was closed off in a log cabin with a roaring fire

This is the first book in a series set after "The Last of the Mohicans". Epic and romantic - great for fans of the "Outlander" series!

Much of this first in a series of six novels is reminiscent of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, later in time, set in Upstate New York, minus the time travel. A few of the characters from that series even have bit parts here. I first read Into the Wilderness before I first read Outlander, so I didn't see the connections. All that aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this one, in spite of some cardboard characters. Elizabeth Middleton, proper 29 year old spinster from well off English family comes with her profligate brother to join their father in tiny frontier settlement in the wilderness northwest of Albany. She doesn't know that her father's plan is to marry her off to the town doctor, to settle his debts and her brother's gambling debts. But the Native American tribe who shares the area learns to call her "Bone in her Back" for her stubbornness and persistence--Elizabeth has a mind of her own. She spent years preparing to teach school, and told her father, the judge, of her plans. He doesn't tell anyone, hoping his matchmaking will go smoothly. All kinds of crises interfere, except that she falls in love with Nathaniel, a Scot who was raised by the Natives, and they marry, disappearing into the bush. Elizabeth grows up fast, learning to do lots of things she'd never done before.

For several chapters, the writing seemed stilted and immature. Only the plot kept me going. Surprisingly, the writing greatly improved by midway - almost as if another writer had taken over. Am looking forward to reading more works.

Epic, post-Revolutionary family drama, located in Indian territory and colonists' settlements of upstate New York.
Vivid characters.
Great dialogue.
Beautiful landscape.
Romance, tragedy, hostility, conflict.
Huge plot twist at the end.
Book 1 of a 6 books series.

I read the author's book, THE GILDED HOUR, set in NY in the late 1800s and thoroughly enjoyed it, for the well-researched historical setting as well as the stories of the two women doctors, an oddity at the time.

So I was looking forward to this book, but found it disappointing. I enjoyed the historical setting and the characters but I felt I was going from one "soap opera like" disaster to another. I think the author tried to accomplish too much and that some of the characters, including Julian, were just a bit too unbelievable.

Fans of "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon will enjoy this series. It's a historical fiction with a few guest "appearances" by characters from Gabaldon's "Outlander" series. Easy to read but still with suspense. The only downfall is that the ease at which characters solve their problems are fairly simple to predict.

As a huge fan of the Outlander series I was so happy to find this book. The first in the series features a strong female heroine in a wild, new country. It has great historical details, beautiful landscape imagery, and a slow building, intense, passionate love story.
