Born in China to parents whose musical careers were interrupted by the Cultural Revolution, Lang Lang has emerged as one of the greatest pianists of our time. Yet despite his fame, few in the West know of the heart-wrenching journey from his early childhood as a prodigy in an industrial city in northern China to his difficult years in Beijing to his success today. This autobiography documents the remarkable, dramatic story of a family who sacrificed almost everything--his parents' marriage, financial security, Lang Lang's childhood, and their reputation in China's insular classical music world--for the belief in a young boy's talent. And it reveals the devastating and intense relationship between a boy and his father, who was willing to go to any length to make his son a star. An engaging, informative cultural commentator who bridges East and West, Lang Lang's book opens a door to China.

A fascinating read. I have often been curious what was going on in Lang Lang's mind while he plays as beautifully as he does, this book gives an inkling of the joy and sorrow that has filled his young mind. He is a gifted young man who enjoys what he can do.

It is also wonderful that he shares the ability to make music with other children around the world.

How a father's ambition was vicariously fulfilled by his son. Lang Lang practiced 8 hours a day since he was 7 years old. "Nurture" played a very significant role in his musical development even though he came from a family that appreciated music.
An interesting read about the intense competitiveness in China amongst the families that were forced to have one and only one child.

There are so many fascinating aspects to Lang Lang's life (he is only 26) so far - from his delight in getting his first piano at age 23 months and the playfulness he associated with the instrument (his musical influence included Tom & Jerry playing Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody), to the poverty his family experienced in Shengyang and Beijing, his separation from his mother (orchestrated by his father who was completely obsessed with his son's success), and of course his incredible achievements as a concert pianist.
