My 4 year old and I loved this book. While most of the concepts were over her head, the flow of the story and rhythm are actually quite soothing for a book with such complex issues. She and I both loved the mystery with her continually asking, "Why are they doing that?" and my answer having to be, "We'll have to keep reading to find out." She has already asked to read it again.

Lily Mathis doesn’t speak and she won’t look anyone in the eye, at least not since her brother Pete died. But Lily isn’t ‘brain damaged’ as some people suspect. She can still think and feel and in private she still reads her favorite books, the Nancy Drew Mysteries. Lily is content living this way until someone new comes to town and changes everything. When Tinny shows up Lily realizes that she isn’t the only one with pain and grief in her life. Tinny lies and steals and Lily is certain that Tinny knows the truth about her silence. Lily doesn’t like Tinny and she doesn’t want to help her but when Tinny goes missing after an encounter with a bad man Lily must face the pain of her brother’s death and learn to speak all over again. This novel packs a lot of feeling into a small package and will stick with you long after you’ve finished.
