Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Charter-Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life—and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny.

Garth Nix does a beautiful job of introducing the world of Sabriel; a young lady who travels from her school where she is a prefect, into the darker world of magic where she becomes a necromancer and earns the title of Abhorsen. Listening to Tim Curry narrate the story brings the characters to life and keeps the audience entranced with his interpretations of what the characters would sound like. Definitely a series to get involved in.

This is a classic that any fan of YA fantasy should read. Sabriel is a necromancer, trained in the art of ringing bells to ensure that the gate between the world of the living and the world of the dead remains intact. When her father goes missing, she must journey into the Old Kingdom to rescue him. And if that didn’t convince you to read it, it also has a snarky magical talking cat. Pro tip: the audiobook is AMAZING.

An interesting conceptualization of the necromancer, but an otherwise uninteresting "read." I thought Tim Curry might make it more exciting, but in fact, it took away from the book. Also, boys should not write romance.
