Good story but kinda dated gangster film, but great to see Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren in starring roles. Also, some very interesting shots of the city of London.

Extremely violent. Personally, I thought that overall, it was pretty stupid.
The acting is excellent, of course, and yes, it keeps moving (definitely NOT boring), but the events aren't realistic at all, and again, just stupid. Interesting seeing a younger Helen Mirran (though I think she keeps getting better looking, as she gets older = ). Also, Pierce Brosnan's first film. But don't blink. He only makes 2 brief appearances, and has no lines.

Right up there with Godfather I and II, Goodfellas, and American Gangster. The best ever British mob movie. Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren are tours de force. Hopefully, this DVD version is the one with English subtitles because much of the juicy dialogue contains British mob and Cockney idioms and expressions.

Like movies about gangsters about to go legit, pulled back into crime? Bob Hoskins tears that genre a new one, guts it, turns it inside out, and hangs it from a meat hook. His character is the hardest of the hard cases, but he makes the mistake of crossing the one force that can stop him. Helen Mirren co-stars as his gorgeous partner/moll.

Bob Hoskins in his breakout role was very good. He gives an indication of the the intense performances to come. Although made in the 1980's, film has a 70's or late 60's feel to it. The story was a bit convoluted and not really explained until the end of the movie and even then, it didn't make a whole lot of sense. Check out young Pierce Brosnan as an IRA hitman. I think the original title of The Paddy Factor would have been more appropriate.

Closed captions are very poorly designed. Very small, white & fuzzy, sometimes showing w/ 2 lines one above the other and sometimes w/ 3 lines.
The movie may've been novel at it's debut but it seemed to this viewer to be really dated and - boring. Nothing worse for a movie assessment than boring. Might be good for a snooze for those who can or who like to nap during movies. There was one interesting bit - seeing Hoskins and Mirren when they were so young.
