Overcome by the power of memory, Ann Lord reveals a long-held secret to her concerned daughters. Constance is a content wife and mother. Nina is a restless single woman. Both are bedside when Ann calls out for the man she loved more than any other. But her daughters wonder who is Harris and what is his relation to their mother? Constance and Nina try to take stock of Ann's life as their mother is tended to by a night nurse as she journeys into her mind back to a summer weekend some fifty years before, before she was married, going from New York City to be maid of honor at the high-society Newport wedding of her dearest friend from college, Lila Wittenborn. The bride-to-be is jittery, and turns to her maid of honor rather than her own mother for support. Ann stays close to her friend, yet is even closer to Lila's irrepressible brother Buddy. Unexpected feelings surge forth once Ann meets wedding guest Harris Arden, a lifelong friend and intimate of the Wittenborn family. Ann's love for Harris will change her life, and those of her daughters, forever.

On her death bed, Ann Lord, calls out the name Harris; her two daughters, Constance and Nina, are perplexed by this name they have never heard before and wonder what role this man played in their mother’s life. Nina especially seeks answers to unknown questions as she is struggling to validate her own life, but as days melt into one another memory begins to wash over Ann taking her back fifty years to the wedding of her college friend, Lila Wittenborn. Ann is Lila’s foundation keeping her calm in a way that Lila’s mother can’t and offers companionship to Lila’s brother Buddy yet he desperately wants more, but it’s their family friend Harris Arden that steals her heart. Her love for him sets in motion the events that will define the rest of their lives. This book Evening by Susan Minot was also made into a movie starring Toni Collette, Claire Danes, Hugh Dancy, and real life mother and daughter, Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson.

This movie is bad even for chic movies which I mostly like. Slow and boring.

Vanessa is amazing as Ann as she floats through the watery memories of her youth and life, but it is a life absent of any true blood warming experiences.

Soap opera with distinguished cast but annoying plot: people conclude they love "the wrong person" without taking appropriate actions to help their love succeed. I only liked the ending with its insightful statement on motherhood.

Really enjoyed this movie about a dying woman reminiscing about her life and the "mistakes" she might have made regarding relationships as a young woman with men. Brilliant cast includes two mother-daughter teams (Vanessa Redgrave & Natasha Richardson, and Meryl Streep & Mamie Gummer). The woman reminds me of my mother's dementia as she floats in and out of reality. Now my husband wants to read the book.
