Julia DeSmit can't wait for her life to begin. After her mother leaves when Julia is nine years old, she's raised by an unassuming, gentle father and a saintly, matriarchal grandmother until her father dies just as Julia is becoming a young adult. On the cusp of womanhood, Julia feels jaded by her circumstances and longs for a new identity. College seems like the perfect place to start over. But when Julia makes a mistake that will change her life forever, she returns to her grandmother's farm, defeated and convinced of her own worthlessness. Only through the gentle prodding of her loving grandmother does Julia begin to accept the imprint her childhood has left on her life and look for hope in a loving God who longs to make all things new.

I cannot determine whether or not I enjoyed this book. First, I found Julia whiny and immature. She complained about not having friends, and got upset when nobody reached out to her when realistically, she put herself in the shadows.

Despite the idiosyncrasies of the character, the book was addictive. I don't know why and I can't explain it, but her story was just addictive. Maybe it was because her story is so opposite of mine but even though I wasn't crazy about Julia, I could not put this book down.

Life can spiral out of control so quickly. I love how the other characters in the book respond to Julia's chaos. It would be easy for this story to be despairing, just one more proof that people from delinquent backgrounds will never rise above. Instead this book is hopeful and loving, full of the value and sanctity of life, even with all its trials.
