Loved this book. If you are into history and want to read about World War One, this is it. My fiance, who is not into history, enjoyed it very much.

On the eve of the Great War's 100th anniversary, this is a great book to reacquaint yourself with the basics - or to dive in for the first time. The main thing about Meyer's book is that it's highly readable - no fussing about with mentions of so-and-so division moving five clicks to fortify General so-and-so's position on whatever date. It gives you the big, broad facts, and presents them in an interesting and engaging manner. Meyer also does something that I love, and more historians should do this, too - right after introducing a new player to the book (The Ottoman Empire! Franz Ferdinand! Czar Nicolas!) Meyer stops the book and gives you a quick three-to-five page breakdown of why and how that person or thing matters to the overall equation. Often, I was so fascinated by these little digressions that I wanted to go off and explore them instead of continuing with the book!

A great intro book for those, like myself, that know little to nothing about World War I. The background chapters are very helpful and informative to provide a broader context to the story. The book is mostly limited to the European continent with some brief asides to Africa and the Middle East.
