I like Robert Hellenga's novels. And I especially like how the characters are all tied together. His characters are very real, I feel like I actually know them and I hate to say goodbye. Rudy, the main character, is 60 and trying to figure out what to do with himself. I think that happens to many at that point in life. Other books by Hellenga - The Sixteen Pleasure, Blues Lessons, Fall of a Sparrow.
