On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and catapulted the United States into World War II. It marked the beginning of a series of successful Japanese assaults on Allied forces. It wasnt until the Battles of Midway and Guadalcanal that the tide of the war was turned in the Allies favor. With crucial naval battles, the war swept across the entire Pacific. Millions of lives had been lost, and thousands, perhaps even millions more were in danger of being lost if U.S. forces invaded Japan. Instead, President Truman made the decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, effectively and tragically ending the war. This comprehensive account details these battles and more, leading to the end of one of the most devastating wars in history.

Pacific – Chronicles of America’s Wars by Barbara Williams is a brief and very informative book that any juvenile or an adult can really enjoy. I personally love History and I leaned many interesting facts on the USA’s struggle after Pearl Harbour to regain control in the Pacific and Indian Ocean by pushing Japan back island by island. They were in part supported by troops and ships from Australia. The book begins of course with the sneak attack on Pearl Harbour. The author then touches on the push to take the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, the Philippine Islands, Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Guam, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. A great reference book for a young reader and detailed enough to satisfy an adult reader. Don’t miss reading Tom McGowan’s books: ‘Sink the Bismarck,’ ‘Germany’s Lighting War’ – Panzer Divisions of World War II, ‘Air Raid’ – The Bombing Campaigns Of World War II, and ‘Carrier War,’ three more raise your interest in History type of books.
