Having heard stories from my ancestors and seen photographs similar to the ones in this book, I believe the author presents what pioneer life was really like. I applaud her. It was mostly grim. And yet there were some fun times. Page 61 has a description of the game "Ante-I-Over." My father taught me to play this when I was a child growing up in North Dakota!

Don't skip the "Note to Readers." Her description of the difference between historical fiction and real stories (non-fiction) is well written.
