An Offer From A Gentleman
Large Print - 2001
Sophie Beckett never dreamed she'd be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton's famed masquerade ball -- or that "Prince Charming" would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight!

Easily my favorite Bridgerton installment so far. This one is an obvious Cinderella story, but Sophie is a sympathetic heroine and Benedict mostly so (I think the obvious fairy-tale framework makes some of his actions, which would be appalling in real life, tolerable). In this year 2020, I want blatant escapism, and this fit the bill perfectly.
Delightful.
I have to admit, I was not in love with the first 25% of the book and it's near identical retelling of Cinderella. I enjoy retellings, but not when they're a retread of the original. Fortunately, after 25%, the story managed to turn itself around and give me a more unique and enjoyable romance.
An absolute delight from start to end. If you're looking for a great romance novel but you've shied away from, fear not--this is the one that hooked me on the genre.
