Through the eyes of Patrick, both bright as a 19 year old soldier off to the Great War and as an 81 year old, Jonathan Hull explores one man's world of discovery, love and ultimately, regret. From the vicious savagery of trench warfare to the sometimes comic and often tragic indignities of life in a nursing home, Losing Julia is an unforgettable journey through Patrick Delaney's memories.

As a 19-year-old from New Jersey, Patrick Delaney wants nothing more than to fight in the Great War. When he heads off with his best friend, he doesn't know that only one of them will return. While in France at a memorial service for the tenth anniversary of the battle that killed his best friend, Patrick begins a passionate love affair with his best friend's widow, Julia. As they struggle to make sense of their love, Patrick makes a mistake that may cause him to lose Julia forever.

An older gentlemen recalls his youth when he was fighting in France during the Great War and where he found and lost the great love of his life. Such a beautiful story.

I thought this book was a beautiful account of the reality of old age as well as an insightful account of war. It is a book of the human experience. The realities of life and love and death as they happened to one man. It takes us to the trenches on the front line and shows us the very realistic human experience of war and it also takes us into the mind and heart of an old man who is nearing the end of his life. It stays with you.

This title is one of my top ten reads. I would recommend this to people who like historical novels or a compelling storyline. His other novel "Distance from Normandy" is good as well.
