One of my favourite books and my favourite of Jane Smiley's. It is a wonderful, big and big-hearted read with characters you'll long remember, many of them being of the equine variety :)
I wish everyone could read and love this book as I do-- it gave (and gives) me much pleasure.

A fascinating group of characters, both equine and human (plus the inimitable fox terrier, Eileen), are introduced in the early chapters of this book which spans two years at the major racetracks in the U.S. The reader quickly becomes involved in their intermingling stories and has to keep reading to see what happens next! Amidst a wealth of convincing detail Smiley immerses us in the racing world showing evident knowledge and acute observation to satisfy the horse-lover, combined with enough of her own brand of satirical detachment and humour to delight all readers.
