Encyclopedia of Gambling

Book - 1990
Rate this:
A remarkable compilation which, in some 1000 entries, describes the details of a large number of games; covers gambling's history, language, personalities; and also initiates the naive into the many dimensions of cheating and misrepresentation (of state lotteries, for example). The fun and allure of gambling comes across, as well as the destructive consequences for individuals. The extensive bibliography is classified and briefly annotated. Cross-referencing and indexing are thorough. The A-Z format may not have been the best for the subject (chapters on games, cheating, laws, history would probably make the presentation more coherent); but it's still an accessible and useful work for gamblers and those who deal with them.
