Containing two related short stories, this collection hauntingly recounts one woman's experiences in a German concentration camp, and the manner in which they later affect her. In the story "The Shawl," Rosa manages to hide her daughter from the Nazi's in the concentration camp. Before long, however, tragedy strikes. "Rosa" picks up the title character's life thirty years later, as she is trying to make a new life for herself in the United States.
