In sections entitled "Listening," "Learning to See," and "Finding a Voice," Eudora Welty born (1909) and raised in Jackson Mississippi, describes her childhood and youth and coming of age as a writer. She ends the book with this statement: "As you have seen, I am a writer who came of a sheltered life. A sheltered life can be a daring life as well. For all serious daring starts from within."
