Long Piddleton had always been wary of newcomers. But the quiet town was stunned when the first stranger was found dead, upended in a butt of ale in the cellar of the Men with a Load of Mischief. Then the second body appeared, swinging in place of the mechanical man above the door of the Jack and Hammer. Suddenly, Long Piddleton had good reason to be wary of everyone. Its cozy pubs and inns with their polished pewter and blazing hearths had become scenes of the most bizarre crimes. Who were the victims? And who was the murderer? A stranger? A maniac? Or the disarmingly friendly man next door?

Martha Grimes is my second favorite mystery author right after Christie. I love her humor and her characters are developed so well that you begin to feel like you are at home.

I enjoyed the characters and especially detective Jury. Also the descriptions of the village and area is interesting. Martha Grimes is already high on my list of mystery authors!

This is the first book in a great series. Inspector Richard jury and his group of irregulars make for excellent reading. I've read the entire series and highly recommend it.

I'm glad that this very first of the Richard Jury crime novels was available to read from The Store. This is the entree to the full menu. Martha Grimes was one of the first among the American crimewriters who set their whodunits in Great Britain with a raft of very quirky British characters.
