Adolf Hitler had told the world precisely what he meant to do with the Jews when he came to power. Lanny Budd had read Mein Kampf when it was first published in 1925. He knew that Hitler was the greatest menace that civilization had ever known. But his wife Irma, and their rich and frivolous friends, could not conceive that the good German people, with their passion for order and cleanliness, could follow such a madman, or help him build his concentration camps. Even after the first refugees from the Terror had begged for mercy on their very doorsteps. Lanny understood. His best friend, a gentle Jewish idealist, was being slowly beaten to death in Dachau. But Irma had made it very clear that she wanted her husband all to herself. Lanny would have to choose between his wife and his ideals.
