Plenty of charm and wit makes for an enjoyable read—but the mystery, or rather mysteries, were somewhat hollow, with weak character motivations and unsatisfying endings. The 2020 movie adaptation was better.

I decided to read this series after the Netflix adaptation came out. I had read one of the books in the series when I was in middle school and remembered enjoying it. I'm pleased to say that I also enjoyed this even though I am ten years…

Plot or Premise
Mycroft and Sherlock have a dead father, an aging mother who banished them, and a much younger sister. When Mom goes missing, Mycroft and Sherlock arrive to take charge, but Enola has things well in hand, thank you very…
Not giving a starred rating because I didn't finish the book -- I put it down after the first chapter or two because I got annoyed with the writing style. It's very brick-by-brick, and not compelling for me as a reader. I was excited to…

The book had me until page 101 and the following passage, which I find extraordinarily culturally insensitive and not something I would expect to see in present-day literature (and had no place in literature from the past, either):
"And…

We read the book, then watched the Netflix movie, and spent the entire movie shouting out, "THAT didn't happen in the book," or "THIS is so not in the book," and "WHERE did that come from? Enola would never do that!"
First of all, the…
If this book has been available when I was ten, I likely would have loved it. Even at that age I was a fan of mysteries. Also, I read a few of Nancy Springer's books as a child and enjoyed them.
While I would recommend parents purchase…

I decided to read this series after seeing the Netflix movie based on this title. It does differ a bit from the movie but it's good in its own way with being a novel. Once you read it, you will understand why Netflix chose to adjust some…
I can't believe that I had never heard of these books before the Netflix movie came out.
They were very well written but contained content still appropriate for middle schoolers; an exceptional find amidst all the trashy writing we find…

I can see the bits and pieces of the Netflix movie in this first book. It's a good series so far.

I'm a sucker for anything Sherlock Holmes, and this was a lot of fun to read! Geared toward a juvenile audience, and with Sherlock and Mycroft set in the background as minor characters, it was very enjoyable to see a much younger Holmes…

This series is a true treasure, excellent mystery and theme and anything relating to Sherlock Holmes and I'm immediately interested in it. I can't wait for the movie!

I can’t believe I didn’t already know about this series! It is a wonderful mix of mystery and historical fiction and will delight fans of both genres. Of course fans of Sherlock will enjoy this series as well. I’m always impressed when I…

I've been reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories recently, so this was a fun and intriguing companion read. The idea of Sherlock and brother Mycroft having a much younger sister is an entertaining idea in itself, and Enola is a great…
What an engaging series! I love the protagonist, enjoy seeing S. Holmes in a different light, and am getting an education in London poverty. So interesting, enlightening, and enjoyable!
