The book is very interesting all together. In a way one could see this book as a message of light and hope. It makes you feel so good in a way that not many books can. And although it does get a bit boring and stretched out at times, it’s a lovely story, with a plot line that glows like a lantern in the dark.

In a city where everything was supposed to be forever, the power started flickering. In Ember, a young boy notices that each time, the power outs seem to last longer and longer. The threat of eternal darkness sets in nicely with the introduction of this young boy's journey to find his true identity and purpose. Unsure of who to trust in his rule-breaking, he is on a race against time to solve the city's biggest problem. With the uncovering of secrets, can he find a way to get the citizens of Ember out of the resource-dwindling city?

This book proved to be very inspiring for me and has a very important message about not ever giving up. A girl named Lina switches jobs with another boy to become a messenger on Assignment Day. She reveals some unknown regions and tries to find a way out of the place they live. There are many problems the people in the city of Ember to deal with due to their insufficient light. Lina and her friend go on a miraculous but dangerous adventure and try to save their city from the darkness. Together, there might be a chance for them to find the passage leading out of the city where no one has been able to find before.

This was an extraordinary book. The movie's trailer was awesome and it seemed so exciting to watch. There was a lot of plot and conflict and I really enjoyed that!

An interesting concept that is well-written, but not terribly full of conflict. I don't know why, but everything seems to resolve too easily. Otherwise, a nice read with good characters and messages.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I love the way things don't always go exactly like planned, to create an unexpected ending. GREAT Job Jeanne DuPrau!

This book was good. I liked how the author wrote from both of the protagonists perspective. Also, I like how it was very descriptive. Overall, I thought that this was a very good book.

What happens when instructions on how to save your city (and possibly all of human civilization) is typed on a paper that your little sister chews to shreds before anyone can examine it? You'll have to read City of Ember to find out!

As an adult I still liked this book. It's fun to look through the eyes of a child once and a while, and here you get an intellectual one to boot. The idea of humans living underground to survive some sort of natural disaster is compelling, and seeing a civilization 200+ years in the future trying to seriously interpret words and phrases such as "hogwash" (whose meanings have been lost) and pining for cans of pineapple (which ran out of stock years ago) kept me engaged. I listened to the audio and it was a great way to pass the time while walking the dogs.

The book was an interesting and thought provoking read - my daughter read it in the 3rd grade.

We watched the movie together and that was a huge disappointment. The book was so much better.

In the exciting start to the People of Ember series Lina is selected for the job of a pipeworks laborer but she wants the job of a messenger more than anything and Doon who is in her class is the opposite. So they do a job trade and both of them find new things about their city while doing their job
